Measuring categories per IEC 61010-1

Measuring categories per IEC 61010-1
CAT Definition Applications
0* Measuring equipment without connection to the mains which cannot be allocated to categories CAT II through CAT IV. For example batteries etc.
CAT II Measurements in electrical circuits which are directly connected to the low-voltage main Via plug, e.g. in household, office and laboratory applications.
CAT III Measurements in building installations Stationary consumers, distributor terminals, devices connected permanently to the distributor
CAT IV Measurements at power sources for low-voltage installation Meters, mains terminals, primary overvoltage protection device

* The possibility of designating this category in the future as "0" or "CAT 0" is currently being considered.

With regard to multimeters and test instruments, the CE declaration of conformity confirms that European regulations (low-voltage directive and EMC directive) are adhered to.

The CE declaration is a prerequisite for putting products into circulation within the European Community. Adherence is substantiated by fulfilling the following standards: IEC 61010-1 (international), DIN EN 61010-1 (German version) and VDE classification VDE 0411-1, as well as product standards for devices used for testing, measuring or monitoring protective measures. IEC 61557, parts 1 through 16 (international), DIN EN 61557, parts 1 through 16 (German version) and DIN VDE 0413, parts 1 through 16.

Safety requirements for electrical equipment for measurement, control and laboratory use are described in this standard.

Currently valid safety regulations include:

  • IEC 61010-1:2010 + Cor.:2011
  • DIN EN 61010-1:2011-07
  • VDE 0411-1:2011-07

Currently valid product standards include:

  • IEC 61557-1 bis 16:2014
  • DIN EN 61557-1 bis 16:2015
  • VDE 0413-1 bis 16:2016
